I wanted “The Tree of Passion” to feel more than simply beautiful. I wanted the tree to carry emotion, to feel rooted and strong while the canopy above seemed full of energy.
I created the photograph using ICM (Intentional Camera Movement), a technique in which I deliberately move the camera during the exposure. Instead of freezing every detail, the movement softens the scene, turning a familiar subject into something more painterly and expressive.
For this work, I kept enough structure for the tree to remain recognisable. The dark trunk gives the composition stability, while the canopy becomes softer, more fluid and alive.
When Passion Becomes Colour
The crimson developed during the next stage of my process, in my contemporary darkroom, where I refine colour, tonality, grain and texture while working with the original exposure.
I wanted the red to carry the emotional force of the piece. Crimson can suggest love, desire, courage and intensity, but here I wanted it to feel like energy moving through the tree itself.
The quieter landscape around it matters too. Its softer tones give the colour space to breathe and make the tree feel even more present.
Rooted in Stillness, Moving with Fire
I wanted the grounded trunk to give the artwork strength and stillness, while the canopy above moved in a completely different way, full of energy and emotion.
That contrast became the heart of “The Tree of Passion”. To me, passion can be powerful and intense while still being deeply rooted.
Something that burns without destroying. Something that moves without losing its strength.

Impact
Colour & Tone: Crimson dominates the canopy, while softer earth tones and a muted sky create a quieter setting around it. The contrast gives the tree immediate emotional intensity.
