Unfolding City: Layers of Meaning
Pause here. Let your eyes wander across the skyline, blurred into movement, before reading further — let the colours reveal themselves, one layer at a time.
A City Dreamed in Violet and Rose
London is rarely still. It breathes, shifts, and pulses — a place where centuries-old domes stand beside towers of glass, where the Thames carries stories both ancient and new. In this work, the city has been allowed to flow rather than stand rigid, its outlines softened into a haze of colour. The familiar shapes of St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Gherkin, and the Walkie-Talkie building remain, but they hover like memory, dissolved into painterly abstraction.
The palette — indigo sky dissolving into violet skyline and rose-coloured water — is not the light of dusk, but a deliberate vision: a reimagining of the city as a place of stillness, transformation, and renewal.
The Layer of Indigo: Stillness and Depth
At the very top, indigo spreads across the sky, a colour of depth and quietness. This is the layer of reflection, an atmospheric pause above the restless city below. Indigo carries the sense of night approaching — a veil of calm that holds the composition together.
The Layer of Violet: Transformation and Flow
In the middle, the skyline dissolves into violet haze. Here, familiar shapes — domes, bridges, towers — lose their solidity and become gestures of movement. Violet speaks of transition, of structures released into rhythm, where the known transforms into the remembered.
The Layer of Rose: Vitality and Renewal
At the base, the river glows in rose and magenta. This is the city’s pulse, carrying energy like a current through its body. Rose warms the palette, softening the abstraction and grounding the work in vitality — the lifeblood flowing beneath stone and sky.
